Daily Dial #126 – A Closer at Wolverhampton

A huge opportunity tonight for one who has tumbled down the weights as a result of not getting a race run to suit her, but she finally looks to have the perfect set up and gets weight all round here. A huge price on account of her recent form, but she is being vastly overlooked as I think they’re all missing the vital clue – her need for early pace.

A race where eight of the thirteen runners have won in higher grades than they compete in today, so this is no ordinary Class 6 All Weather Handicap. However, that quality is actually what I like about this, especially so as many of them like to run positively. WHITE UMBRELLA is a mare who is entirely dependent on getting a strong early pace, allowing her to use her stamina to finish strongly into a collapsing pace. Both Never Dark and Candy Warhol score maximum or near maximum bar on the Formdial Pace Analyser, with three others sitting on 3.00 behind them.

Contested pace

Never Dark and Candy Warhol both want the front, and neither profile suggests handing it over. An honest, end-to-end gallop is the likeliest shape — the closers get the pace they need to aim at.

This is as strong a clue to a strong early pace as we’ll find, which should see a fiercely contested race up front. The mare has only run on three occasions from a mark lower than the basement 54 she goes from here, those being consecutive races back in 2023 where she recorded race figures of 231 from an OR of 53. Her win over C&D last year (16 Jun 2025, OR61) is well worth a watch, as it is the last strongly run race she got and she was a literal steering job under today’s rider, Christian Howarth. She could be called the winner a long way out, cruising throughout the race, and it’s worth noting the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th all won next time out, so it was no gimme.

At 18/1 (Bet365), she would be an easy each-way shout, especially so with a few bookmakers offering enhanced places to the 1-4 (Bet365 included), but at the price I think she is an unbelievable value play, which doesn’t come around often. As such, I’m going to play hard here, as truth be told I would’ve backed her here at anything over 7/1, which would’ve been an obvious win bet. Whilst times have been tough of late, I think this is a massive opportunity which is well worth the risk.

Jenever (9/2, Nottingham 17:15), Topaz (4/7, Salisbury 19:21) and Blue Prince (2/1, Salisbury 19:51).

Good luck all.

Common questions
Why are some bets win-only and others each-way?

Three things decide it: confidence, race shape, and the betting market.

If I think a horse has an outstanding win chance, I'll back it win-only to maximise the return — even at a bigger price, where each-way would normally be the safer call. If the win case is more speculative but the place case is strong, each-way carries the bet.

Concrete example: Almanack at Kempton, 2 July 2014. Advised at 22/1 win-only in the morning. The price shortened to 16/1 SP and he won by a short head on the line. Win-only on a confident shout at a generous price is where the real returns come from — when the case is right, you back it to win, not to hedge.

What happens if my horse is a non-runner?

If a horse is declared a non-runner before the race, your stake is returned in full on win or each-way singles.

If it's part of a multiple (accumulator, lucky-15, etc), the bet runs on without that leg and the remaining legs are recalculated. For ante-post bets the rules differ — usually no refund unless the bookmaker is offering NRNB ("Non-Runner No Bet") on the race. Full breakdown here.

Why no advised bet some days?

Because there isn't one. The cards don't always offer value, and the worst thing a tipster can do is force a selection just to fill a slot.

A "No Bet" day is the system working — it's the same discipline that produces the winners on the days the bets are right. Better to sit out a card cleanly than to bleed the bank on filler. The best days are usually the ones I've been patient before.

What do the stake points mean?

Stakes are sized in points, not pounds — that way the same plan works on any size of bankroll.

The Daily Dial uses a simple scale: 1pt is the minimum bet (or 0.5pt each-way), 2pt is a standard bet (or 1pt each-way), and 5pt is the maximum on the strongest fancies (or 2.5pt each-way). The whole thing runs off a 100pt bankroll, so a £100 bank means a point is £1 and a 2pt bet is £2; a £1,000 bank means a point is £10 and a 2pt bet is £20. Scale to whatever feels comfortable.
