Saturday was a day to play with caution and the same discipline holds today, with two chanced at Hamilton — the betting card of the day — both at each-way prices that earn the stake.

Yesterday’s card I ducked out of and was glad I did. Today looked just as tough, and from a day I thought I’d be going to war I’ve somehow come away with just the one. An each-way punt at Thirsk, a filly badly underrated by the handicapper, and a sire-track angle that’s been paying for years.

No bet today — nothing leaps off the cards worth the risk. But plenty to talk about first, not least the 40/1 winner we chanced last time, and an unlucky eyecatcher under Ryan Moore well worth keeping on side.

A decent day of racing, especially so at York and it looks a right punters card, too. The sort of day where we could have a bit of a boilover so pay attention to the staking plan as I’ve tried thinking about how best to play the chances.

Henry Callan looks to ride another field to sleep on a well-handicapped Silver Gunn at Windsor, and a long-priced each-way speculative on Port Louis at Wolverhampton.

A quieter punting day with Chester left as a watch, but two bets in cooler waters. Great Blasket gets a rare drop into Class 5 at Windsor off his lowest UK mark; Singoura returns to her favoured turf at Redcar after a much-improved reappearance. Plus three at Chester — Roman Dragon, Caturra Lights and Monarch’s Gold — that just missed the cut.

Day one of Chester’s Boodles May Festival, with three plays in one race plus the customary Kempton bet. Huscal and Midnight Strike both each-way at Chester — the latter a 125/1 Irish import worth a minimum stake. Bennyworth runs at Kempton off bottom weight. O’Brien angle on Amelia Earhart discussed.

A weekend on the sidelines for the Guineas, back in the betting today with four plays. Two of Jack Channon’s in-form maidens at Windsor and Kempton — Decade Of Time and Sargent Dennis — plus Daniel Tudhope’s pair at Beverley in Come On Over and Gorey Gold. Henry Callan at Bath looked but left.
