Track Character

Brighton sits in Kemptown on the South Downs above the seaside town, perched roughly 400 feet above sea level with views over the city and the English Channel. The track is left-handed, severely undulating, and shaped like an open horseshoe rather than a complete circuit – one of only a handful of British racecourses without a full loop. The maximum trip is 1m4f, with races starting at the lowest point of the track and finishing at the highest. Multiple sources describe Brighton as a smaller-scale Epsom, sharing the same Sussex chalk-downland geography, the same severe undulations, the same left camber down the home straight, and the same demand for balance over raw galloping power.

The defining feature is the combination of the long downhill descent into the home straight – described by Geegeez as “one of the steepest descents in the world of racing” – and the stiff uphill final 4 furlongs to the winning post. The course climbs almost the entire run-in. Horses who can switch gears and handle the change from descent to ascent thrive here; long-striding gallopers who need time to wind up frequently get caught out. There is also a pronounced left camber across the home straight, with the stands side higher than the far rail, so horses naturally drift left towards the inside as fatigue sets in.
